Orsted to Use Wind Turbine That’s 50% More Efficient in New Jersey and Maryland Offshore Projects

Orsted will bring 1,220 megawatts of offshore wind energy online in the next five years by using a new wind turbine in their New Jersey and Maryland projects. The GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade-X 12 megawatt turbine is the most powerful offshore wind turbine on the market and produces double the energy of the turbines used in the Block Island wind farm. The increased efficiency is intended to cut costs on the overall projects. These new turbines will be much larger with each blade stretching out beyond the length of a standard football field. In order to handle this additional manufacturing, Orsted has committed to invest $13.2 million in an offshore wind manufacturing service area in Baltimore.
