New Avian Movement Data Shows Endangered Species Activity in the Northeast

A new layer added to the Northeast Ocean Data Portal depicts the first satellite tracks of the endangered black-capped petrel. Because of their low numbers, these sea birds can be difficult to map and model meaning satellite data is very helpful in providing a better understanding of their habitat use. Thanks to a collaboration between the portal, the U.S. Geological Survey South Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, ocean planners in the Northeast can now determine how to avoid critical habitat for this endangered species.
