U.S. Department of Energy Commits $28 Million to Floating Turbine Innovation

With a goal to find economically attractive solutions for floating offshore wind turbines, the U.S. Department of Energy’s innovation arm is making $28 million in funding available for research and development projects. The current state of the art floating offshore wind turbines are too massive and expensive for deployment, according to the innovation team. Nearly 60 percent of the U.S.’s accessible offshore wind resource is found in waters more than 200 feet deep. Making floating offshore wind turbines efficient is crucial to reaching that potential.
